138th Kentucky Derby - May 5, 2012
I'll Have Another didn't seem to have the goods to win the Kentucky Derby.
Sold as a yearling for a paltry $11,000, ridden by a rookie jockey hardly anyone knew and stuck in an outside post no horse had ever won from — not exactly a blueprint for success at Churchill Downs.
But with the finish line in sight, the chestnut colt overtook highly regarded Bodemeister in the final furlong Saturday to make a name for himself and rider Mario Gutierrez.

Preakness 2012 Replay: News and Watch I'll Have Another Pull off Amazing Comeback Win http://bit.ly/K3f6xD
This is Afleet Alex dusting the competition in the 2005 Belmont Stakes. He has amazing kick at the end of his races and his early races show that too. It's a sheer shame he was retired after this race.
This is Victory Gallop winning the Belmont Stakes by less than an inch over Triple Crown contender, Real Quiet. As a side note, I nearly fainted watching the end of this Belmont Stakes on TV as I had so much adrenaline running through my body thinking I was about to witness a Triple Crown winner.
Secretariat, Man O' War and Citation were the only non-humans to make the top 100 athletes in the 20th Century. Secretariat was number 35, Man O' War was number 84, and Citation was number 97 . See ESPN.com website

When God created the horse he said to the magnificent creature:
"I have made thee as no other.
All the treasures of the earth lie between thy eyes.
Thou shalt carry my friends upon thy back.
Thy saddle shall be the seat of prayers to me.
And thou shalt fly without wings, and conquer without any sword."
If there were ever a horse that could fly without wings it was Secretariat.

Secretariat (March 30, 1970 -- October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, that in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series—(May 5, 1973 Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5) - the first horse ever to run under 2 minutes, and June 9, 1973 Belmont Stakes (2:24) a World record—these two records still stand today... 39 years later.
SECRETARIAT'S performance in the Kentucky Derby is the greatest Derby performance of all-time.
Secretariat was sired by Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal, by Princequillo. He was foaled at Meadow Farm in Caroline County, Virginia. Like the equally famous horse Man o' War, Secretariat was a large chestnut colt and was given the same nickname, "Big Red."
Owned by Penny Chenery (aka Penny Tweedy), he was trained by Lucien Laurin and mainly ridden by Canadian jockey Ron Turcotte, along with apprentice jockey Paul Feliciano (first two races), and veteran Eddie Maple (last race).
Secretariat raced in Penny Chenery's Meadow Stable's blue and white checkered colors and his groom was Eddie Sweat.
Secretariat stood approximately 16.2 hands (66 inches, 168 cm) tall, and weighed 1,175 pounds (533 kg), with a 75 inch girth, in his racing prime.
